Warm up with winter reading

Reading has been an important part of my healing process. I believe books can take you some place far away from your present circumstance, while also imparting wisdom. Here are 11 books that I recommend you cuddle up with this winter.

The Lovely Bones, by Alice Sebold
I recently wrote about the lessons from this story here.

The Divergent Series: Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant by Veronica Roth
I don’t know if my head will stop spinning when I think about this story ends. It’s main character is amazingly brave in many hardships. I recently wrote about this story here.

The Wise Heart, by Jack Kornfield
This book is a permanent fixture on my nightstand. I read small pieces of it at a time and let its lessons on Buddhist thought marinate for awhile before picking it up again.

The Glass Castle: A Memoir and it’s prequel Half Broke Horses: A True Life Novel, by Jeannette Walls
“Gumption” runs in this family. These true stories teach you about living life on your own terms, for good or bad.

The Fault in our Stars, by John Green
A tear-jerker about the “tragic business of being alive and in love.”

Where’d You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple
You will love Bernadette, she is a “misplaced genius” in an absurd world. It’s a great mother-daughter story.

Little Children, by Tom Perrotta
An adult drama about the thirty-ish parents and their “botched transitions into adulthood.”

The Emperor’s Children, by Claire Messud
A very smart novel (like thick with big words and everything) about the three friends approaching their thirties “making their way–and not– in New York City.” I like how this book portrays how reality ends up different from the high expectations we place on ourselves.
